Slot canyon with water

It's still very cold, the water will be very cold, and there's not much sun in the canyon.Įdit: if you have the time, I find the nearby 'Maze' pictograph pretty cool. As you hike through the blue water in the gorge, you will look up at rocky canyon walls a thousand feet tall as you walk through the Virgin River.

Some slot canyons, such as Buckskin Gulch in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area, have a very large draining. The Narrows is one of the most iconic day hikes in Zion National Park named for being the most narrow spot in Zion Canyon. A summit lies about 8 miles north of the slot, meaning it takes a very local storm to flood the canyon. I would suggest neoprene socks if you can get them (with trail shoes), and dry bags for the warm layers in case it's a swim. Peekaboo Slot Canyon is safer than many other slot canyons because it has a fairly small draining. These are much more frequent than a lot of river crossings, it's a canyon so you can't really see ahead that well - ie youll get undressed, cross, get dressed - oh know another pool of water 3 minutes later etc, and it will be so muddy your stuff will get covered trying to get it on and off. The last two years it's been dry, but I'd imagine no longer.Īs others have said, do not take stuff on and off, just be prepared to hike wet with extra layers for cold. I've done Wire Pass to Whitehouse in July before and there was chest deep water (and I'm 6 ft). I'd go prepared for potentially full swims in cold water if you are going full thru to paria. It will not be dry with the season we've had.
